New exhibition challenges traditional expectations about Aboriginal art

The new exhibition at the Macquarie University Art Gallery has set out to explore Australia’s Indigenous culture and open up new opportunities for intercultural understanding and engagement.

Curator of the exhibition and former Macquarie University Research Fellow, Jennifer Deger, has brought together works from leading Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists and anthropologists for the 'interventions' exhibition, which breaks new ground in its representation of Indigenous people, communities and culture.

Writers Workshop with Bryce Courtenay

Writers in the Macquarie University community have the rare opportunity to participate in a five-day writers workshop with hugely successful Australian novelist, Bryce Courtenay - whilst helping young people realise their educational dreams.

Courtenay is perhaps best known for The Power of One, which has been translated into 11 languages and was filmed in 1991. His most recent novel, The Story of Danny Dunn has just been released.

Numbers will be restricted to ensure everyone has time for a one-on-one session with Courtenay. These sessions will be held between 4pm and 7.30pm each day.

Another highlight of the workshop will be the chance to talk with the noted scriptwriter Peter Yeldham about how he adapted Courtenay’s novel, Jessica, for television. A copy of Jessica will be sent to attendees after completion of workshop registration.

The workshop will cost $2,800 including GST ($2,500 for staff and alumni and $2,250 for students and pensioners). An early bird discount (reducing the price to $2,500) applies to registrations received by close of business Friday 29 January.

Once expenses have been met, all remaining money will go towards providing scholarships for the University’s Department of Ancient History - to bring high school students to summer schools and for undergraduate students who are struggling with their living expenses or fees.

Bryce Courtenay has donated his time and wisdom for this workshop to thank staff and students in the Department of Ancient History for their help in writing Sylvia. The University would like to thank both him and Peter Yeldham for their tremendous generosity.
