Water Savings devices installed across campus

"Through our Partnership with Sydney Water's Every Drops Counts Program, the Office of Facilities Management have installed water savings devices including aerators, airlock and cistern weights in bathrooms and kitchens across campus.

These devices can save up to 30% of water use where they are installed.

Please be aware that these cistern weights in toilets will require you to fully depress the flush until the water stops flowing. Signs have been placed in these toilets.

Changes to E-Waste disposal days

E-Waste disposal days have changed. They will now be held at regular monthly intervals. The next disposal day will be between 11am and 2pm Wednesday 10 March.

Where: E-Waste Y3A Loading dock* see map attached.
When: 10 March
Time:11am-2pm

Previously, e-waste disposal was arranged at a venue on campus in a single day four times a year.  Now that we have the new Arts faculty building (Y3A) up and running we have some space and will be operating a different system.

The policies and procedures remian the same. The changes refer to the days, times, venue and the key contact.  From now on, E-waste disposal will be arranged through the Office of Facilities Management (not ITS).  E-Waste can be disposed of during a short window of time once a month.  On the second Wednesday of every month (with the exception of January when we hope that most of you will be on holiday!) the new E-waste room will be open and supervised between 11am and 2pm.

The dates for the next 4 E-waste days are as follows:

10 March 2010

14 April 2010

That means that you can save on storage space in your office by removing e-waste once there is no longer any possible use for it, but it also means you must arrange for the e-waste to be delivered to the Y3A building during between 11am and 2pm on those dates. There will not be any exceptions for late arrivals, so please make sure you are there on time, or you will need to wait until the next e-waste disposal day.

The draft E-waste policy is available on the ITS website.

The Exception

For large e-waste items (such as photocopiers etc.) please lodge a call or a maximo request with the OFM service desk (7145).  Once the volume of E-waste is sufficient to collect, we will get the E-Waste truck to swing by your office and pick it up. This may be after two or more e-waste days so will not be immediate.  Note, that this comes at a cost to the University, so only applies to items that cannot be transported by the Office or Faculty.

NOTE: OFM will not arrange pick up from your office for other items. They MUST be transported to the loading dock by the faculty or office disposing of the waste.

Faculties and Offices are responsible for:

  • Asset deletion documentation, as per the University Asset policy
  • Data sanitization or hard disk destruction. (A loan copy of DISK-KILL sanitization software is available from IT Services).  To obtain a copy, log a call with ITS service desk ext 4357 and select option 2
  • Arrange transport of waste to holding area on 11th November between  11am-2 pm
  • No white goods will be accepted (fridges, microwaves, etc) this must be arranged separately
  •  If you have items that are too large to transport eg, photocopier, large printers etc, please log a call on the OFM Services desk 7145

*E-Waste room Y3A Loading Dock. Please note that vehicle access is ONLY available off Culloden Rd and via Haddonfield road.

Award Winning Design for Macquarie's Central Courtyard

OFM engaged a consultant team including access and lighting consultants, an arborist, engineers, a landscape architect and a quantity surveyor. They prepared a concept for the Central Courtyard. The concept consisted of three major components:

  • A large paved plinth surrounding the courtyard trees
  • New access points from Wally's Walk
  • New paving surrounding the plinth

The new paving on the plinth is permeable to allow air and moisture to the trees, whilst creating a durable, flexible and low maintenance platform ensuring the future health of the trees while allowing easy access through the central courtyard. The paving used is a grey "Ecolock" type paving, which was used for the forecourt of the Sydney Olympic stadium. Improved lighting, new seating and tables, additional power provisions, a wireless external study area, upgrading of some hydraulic services and a strategy to limit maintenance vehicle access were also included in the design.

This project won a Public Domain Award from the industry association Concrete Cement and Aggregates Australia.
